Wichita Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing with Six Ways to Eat for Success
September 20, 2019
Dieting is hard at any age, but it can be even more difficult for those over 60 years of age due to the body using fewer calories on a daily basis.
One mistake that many people make is trying to overhaul their eating habits overnight, when dieticians say the best way to ensure long-term success is by making one change at a time.
Wichita Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing would like to share seven small changes that you can gradually turn into a successful lifestyle change.
-
Ask Yourself Questions
It’s one thing to follow your plan, but what happens when temptation arrives in the form of a sweet treat at a party or a invitation to a restaurant that makes your favorite pizza? The best thing to do is ask yourself whether you’re really hungry enough for that treat, or if the meal is worth the extra calories?
-
Remove Temptation
Heed the old adage, “Don’t go to the grocery store while you’re hungry.” Make a list, and stick to it. Leave calorie-loaded food like cookies, chips, and candy on the shelves.
-
Drink Water
You may be confusing hunger for thirst. Drink the recommended eight glasses of water per day and you may find your hunger cravings disappearing.
-
Be Aware of What You Eat
Don’t snack in front of the TV or while chatting on the phone. Be aware of the foods you eat and how much you’re eating.
-
Watch Your Pace
It can take up to 20 minutes for your brain to receive the signal from your stomach that you’re full. Digest for a moment before going back for seconds.
-
Indulge Occasionally
Having the occasional treat or cheat day will allow you stay on track when it counts, so you’re able to reward yourself when the time comes.
