Wichita Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Shares Fun Easter Activities for Seniors
April 8, 2019
While the date varies, Easter is the unofficial holiday of springtime, as many take the occasion to sport new styles and spend more time outside.
Seniors — especially those with grandchildren — can contribute to this celebratory time of year in many different ways. Wichita Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing is sharing three sure-fire ways to get the most out of the Easter season.
- Paint Eggs or Create Baskets
This is an easy activity to include the grandkids in, but there are ways for every senior to participate in this time-honored tradition. Many preschools, churches, and community organizations host egg hunts, and any would be happy to accept a donation of plastic eggs (filled with candy, stickers, etc.) and decorated baskets. Taking the time to donate time and goods also fits into the spirit of the Easter season.
2. Find or Organize a Potluck
Do you love to gather together for great conversation over a home-cooked meal? Many do, but lots of seniors either physically cannot or don’t enjoy the hassle of hosting a big family gathering. Churches, fire halls, and even parks are great places for potlucks. See if one is in an area that you frequent, make your favorite dish, and spend more time enjoying each other instead of having to worry about the logistics.
3. Think Green
With Easter taking place on April 21 this year, there’s more of an opportunity to spend time outside. It’s an excellent time to plant flowers, as it not only coincides with the beginning of spring, but it also represents the rebirth and new life of Easter. For seniors unable to work in the garden, buying an Easter lily is a great gesture, as it symbolizes purity, hope, and life — all virtues of Easter.
Celebrate What Easter Means to You
Easter means different things to different people. Some take part in more faith-based traditions. The important thing is to recognize what major holidays mean to the seniors in your life and be sure to include them in your celebrations.
