Oneida Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing on How Essential Oils Can Help Wounds Heal

October 2, 2019

Essential oils have increased in popularity over the past couple of decades, as they are being used as popular home remedies for skin health, mood regulators, and sleep aids, among other things.

But, can essential oils help wounds heal? Chronic wounds (and how slow they heal) is a major issue for seniors, so can these products help in the fight against infection, hospital stays, and other things that can come from stubborn wounds?

Oneida Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing would like to examine some of the popular essential oils and how they might be able to add to your wound care repertoire. Before we get started, however, it’s important to note that these methods don’t replace typical first aid practices. Be sure to still wash a wound, clear it of any dirt and debris, and make sure the bleeding stops before you proceed.

  1. Myrrh

Myrrh can help in disinfecting wounds and stopping bleeding. Unlike many essential oils, it doesn’t have the most appealing scent, so to combat it, you can apply any of the other oils on this list.

  1. Tea Tree Oil

Not only can tea tree oil lower your risk of infection, it can provide relief for burning and redness, along with the itchiness that usually occurs as wounds heal.

  1. Lavender

Lavender is known for its calming properties, and it’s no different here. It can calm any sensations like pain, stinging, or burning. Consider applying it on insect bites, too. Rosemary also works well in this regard.

  1. Helichrysum

This is good for scrapes and wounds with bruising underneath (often seen in falls), as it helps reduce bruising and swelling.

  1. Chamomile

Another natural calming agent (chamomile tea, anyone?), this can soothe the skin as well as your mind.
