The Waterfront Center nursing home was renamed Thursday the Ellicott Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare in a homage to the city's history.

The name change at the 160-bed skilled nursing facility on 7th street is a part of a branding effort by the owner, Bronx-based Centers Health Care, which operates more than 42 skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities in New York State, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.

It coincides with renovations at the nursing home here, including the lobby, activities lounge and main dining room, officials said.

“The decision to change the name to Ellicott Center only speaks of the tremendous respect that the facility has for the history of Buffalo and it’s surrounding areas. It also reinforces the Centers Health Care approach and reinsures that care is at the forefront of who we are,” administrator Denise Marciano said in a statement.

Ellicott Center is named after Joseph Ellicott, the original surveyor of most of Western New York.
