Steuben Center Honors Their Veterans

18 Veterans receive medals as thanks for their service

Eighteen veterans at the Steuben Center in Bath enjoyed a luncheon Friday to thank them for their service and sacrifice, which will never be forgotten.

Megan Allington, activities director at Steuben Center, said each of the veterans received medals and certificates thanking them for their service, enjoyed a wonderful lunch and listened to patriotic music.

“You are all very special. You will receive a different lunch today than everyone else at the (Steuben Center),” Allington told the veterans prior to the luncheon being served. “This is to honor our veterans.”

Allington said food is usually the best way to get to veterans hearts.

“We hope you all appreciate this (event) as much as we appreciate you,” Allington said. “This is your day.”

Arlington said Steuben Center holds a different event each year on or around Veterans Day as an acknowledgment to those willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the country.

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress - at the urging of the veterans service organizations - amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
