Deptford Resident Helen Smith Celebrates the Triple Digits!

Helen Radogna Smith celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at surprise party on June 9 at the Deptford Center. She was born in Camden, baptized in St. Joseph's Church and went to school in Camden. Her parents were from Italy and she had eight siblings.

Helen was married to John Smith by the Justice of the Peace in 1948 and then married by the church 12 years later in 1960. The couple adopted two children.

As a soldier, her husband John received a Purple Heart during WWII. He worked for the Camden County Government Board of Elections. They were married until his death in 1994. 

Helen loved to cook, she loved making spaghetti carbonara and many other Italian dishes. She belonged to the local bowling league and also worked the polls on Election Day.

Helen is described by her niece as being very spunky, always spoke her mind and loved telling jokes.

Helen, is a resident at Deptford Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare on Clements Bridge Road in Deptford.

Helen was born on June 9, 1917, right after President Woodrow Wilson asked the U.S. Congress for a declaration of war on Germany on April 2.
